Do you want to start an online business that makes money selling digital products and/or services using a WordPress blog or website?
If you do, you’ll need to buy a domain name because the first step towards building a WordPress website is to find a good domain name and register it.
In this article, I will show you how to buy a domain name, step by step. Watch the video below to get started.
If you prefer written instructions with screenshots wikiHow style, keep reading.
Step 1. Go To NameCheap
Click this link to go to NameCheap and enter the dot com version of your desired domain name in to the search bar. Then click the search icon to the right.
Step 2. Add To Cart
If your desired domain name is available, it will have a tick to the left of it. And to the right, you’ll see the price.
Assuming it is available, check the domain for spelling errors before you proceed. Click the Add To Cart button.
Step 3. View Cart
After clicking the Add To Cart button in step 2, you will be offered some additional services, including web hosting.
For security reasons, I strongly recommend keeping your domain name and web hosting accounts separate.
If you get web hosting from your domain registrar and your account gets hacked, the hacker also has access to the server your website files are hosted on, and vice versa.
If you register a domain name with your web host and your hosting account gets hacked, the hacker can steal your domain name by transferring it to another account. This is known as domain name hijacking.
With that said, knowing what you now know, for the purposes of this tutorial, I’m going to assume that you will be keeping your domain name and web hosting separate …
- Don’t select any of the available add-ons.
- Click the View Cart button.
Step 4. Choose Your Billing Cycle
After clicking the View Cart button in step 3, you’ll be taken to the shopping cart page. From the dropdown menu next to Domain Registration, select how many years you want to register the domain name for.
To get started with your online business, I recommend registering the domain name for no more than 1 year. That gives you plenty of time to know if you’ll continue with this business idea or head in a different direction.
- Turn domain name registration auto-renew on.
- Keep WhoIsGuard auto-renew on.
- Click the Confirm Order button.
Step 5. Create An Account
Now you need to create an account.
- Enter a username
- A secure password
- Your first name
- Your last name
- Your email address
If you want to receive newsletter updates from Namecheap, select that option. Read the terms of service and click the Create Account and Continue button.
Step 6. Add Account Contact Information
If you’re buying a domain name on behalf of a company, keep that option selected. If not, uncheck the box.
- Enter your postal address
- Add your phone number
- Click continue
Step 7. Configure WhoIs Contact Information
In this step, if your account address is different than your billing address, add a new address in the Billing Contact section.
- Select save the configuration above to my default checkout settings.
- Click the Continue button.
Step 8: Choose Payment Method
The final step is to select your preferred payment method. You can pay by card or PayPal. Personally, I like to pay with PayPal because it’s quicker.
- Choose the payment option that best suits you.
- Don’t change the renewal settings for your purchase
- Select save the configuration above to my default payment settings
- Click the continue button
You will be taken to a new page to review your order.
- Review your order and follow the prompts to make payment.
When your order is complete you will see a thank you page. Make note of your order number just in case there’s a glitch with your purchase which is very unlikely, but never say never.
